Unemployment rate at 8.9 percent in October
Alaska’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose six-tenths of a percentage point in October to 8.9 percent. September’s preliminary rate was revised down one-tenth of a percentage point to 8.3 percent.

The Department of Labor, Research and Analysis Section, is pleased to present its latest product — the Alaska Career Ladder. Based on "real world" analysis of occupation-to-occupation movements of workers in Alaska, it provides a graphical representation of jobs leading to (the ladder below) and jobs advancing from (the ladder above) a given, or target, occupation. There are 802 occupations included, which are based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics Standard Occupational Classification. The Alaska Career Ladder will be a useful tool for those considering career advancement for themselves or their clients.

With 16,940 people, the Bethel Census Area has a small seasonal economic base focused on natural resources, particularly salmon and herring roe, and a cultural tradition of subsistence hunting and fishing. Government jobs, including public education and village organizations, account for almost 50 percent of the region’s payroll jobs.
